The Cabin
Over the course of one weekend in December 2020, I took part in the Yogscast Game Jam. Given the theme of 'surprise' and the time of year, I decided to make a Christmas themed short horror game.
Utilising some free to use assets by Kenney, I set about the task of creating a cabin environment and a spooky monster (which was actually just one of the snowman assets with some glowing red spheres for eyes).
Adding the 'scare factor' and eerie feel to the game was quite simple with the use of some audio effects I found on Opengameart.org.
Overall, the jam went surprisingly well considering it was the first one I actually saw through until the end.
Alongside this, the reception to The Cabin was extremely positive. With, at the time of writing this (12/12/2020), well over 1250 downloads 150,000 impressions and a plethora of Youtubers making videos of the game. Additionally, it has also been the most popular game on the entirety of Itch.io for several days now, beating out the wildly popular Among Us.
At this current point, the growth of the game is increasing in pace with each day and the closer we get to Christmas, the popular I expect it to become.
I am extremely proud of this short project as it has shown to me what can be achieved when I plan out a project and see it through to completion.
Tools used: Unity, C#, GitKraken, Audacity
(As of 14/01/2021, The Cabin has received 7,500 downloads, well over 500,000 impressions, been viewed 20,500 times, been added to 488 collections and had 114 YouTube videos made featuring the game).
